The variations in material, the rubbing marks and the areas of apparent wear are intentional and fully contribute to the construction of the image.
Created in 1976, Le Secrétaire Particulier sits at a turning point in Robert Detheux's body of work, where drawing is closely integrated with a deep exploration of the material of paper and the construction of the surface.
Description of the work
The composition presents a frontal figure with an enigmatic demeanor, whose face is dominated by large circular glasses, almost out of proportion. This detail lends the character a look that is at once functional and unsettling, as if he were both an observer and an instrument of observation. The features are deliberately simplified, nearly neutralized, reinforcing the impression of the erasure of individuality.
The body, massive and compact, is treated with broad areas of light punctuated by fine, hesitant lines. The figure seems to emerge slowly from the support, as if caught in a resistant material, neither fully revealed nor fully concealed.
This formal ambiguity contributes to the psychological atmosphere of the work.
Work with material and texture.
Special attention is paid to the substantive work, which constitutes a fully fledged structuring element.
The surface is animated by an accumulation of rubs, scratches, imprints, and overlays, creating a dense and vibrant texture. This irregular weave envelopes the figure and places it in an undefined space, almost mural, evoking a worn wall, a palimpsest, or a surface marked by time.
Matter is not decorative: it acts as a field of tension, partially absorbing the figure and blurring the boundary between the body and its environment.
This treatment gives the whole thing visual depth and a strong tactile presence.
Style and inspirations
Without resorting to direct quotation, this work engages in dialogue with several currents and sensibilities of the 20th century. One can sense a closeness to certain post-surrealist explorations, as well as to the spirit of art brut and mental figuration, where drawing becomes a tool of introspection rather than a means of faithful representation.
The frontal relationship to the figure, the economy of means, and the density of the surface also recall certain approaches close to expressionist figuration, in which the material bears a psychological charge equivalent to the subject itself.
Artistic context
Dating from 1976, Le Secrétaire Particulier testifies to a phase of consolidation of Detheux's plastic language. The artist asserts here a personal approach to drawing, where the character is never merely anecdotal: it becomes a mental figure, almost administrative or functional, a symbol of a role rather than of an individual.
The title, deliberately precise and offbeat, introduces an ironic and critical dimension, leaving the viewer free to interpret the status and role of this ambiguous character.
Provenance
Private collection, from the artist's family.
Biography
Robert Detheux (1932–2010) was a Belgian artist associated with the Surrealist and Dadaist movements. His work, developed over several decades, is characterized by a constant attention to the human figure, to the materiality of drawing, and to zones of tension between form, psyche, and abstraction.
Through its singular treatment of the figure and its particularly elaborate surface treatment, Le Secrétaire Particulier stands as a representative work of Robert Detheux's artistic maturity in the 1970s, uniting pictorial density, psychological ambiguity, and evocative power.
